Solar Electric
Photovoltaic (PV) cells turn the sun's energy into electricity. Photo means light and volt is a measure of electricity. PV cells are made of a piece of silicon, the main ingredient in sand. Each side of the silicon has a different chemical added. When radiant energy from the sun hits the PV cell, the sides of the silicon work together to change the energy into electricity. (NEED)
Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV)
The BIPV components are photovoltaic materials that are used to replace conventional building materials in parts of the buildingenvelope such as the roof, skylights, or facades. The advantage is that the initial cost can be offset by reducing the amount spent on building materials and labor while integrating into the building features. (Wiki)
Solar Hot Water
Solar Collectors capture the energy from the sun and turn it into heat. People heat their houses and their water using the captured solar energy. Solar energy passes through the glass, heats up the liquid and changes it to heat. (NEED)
Wind
Solar energy makes the winds that blow over the earth. The sun shines down on the earth. Some parts of the surface heat up faster than others. Land, for example, usually heats more quickly than water. The air over the land gets warm. The warm air rises. The cooler air over the water moves in where the warm air was. The moving air is wind. Wind turbines can capture the wind's energy. The wind turbines turn the energy in moving air into electricity. The wind pushes against the blades of the turbine and they begin to spin. A generator inside the turbine changes the motion into electricity. (NEED)
Geothermal
Geothermal heat offers incredible potential. It is an inexhaustible energy source that is nearly emission-free while being safe and clean. Heat is found in the different rock types that make up the Earth's surface, and deeper in the crust. The deeper you get, the hotter it is. Geothermal energy that comes from 500 feet below the surface is called low temperature geothermal energy with temperatures around 45*F and can be extracted with heat pumps, combined with an energy well.
Green Roofs
Green roofs have social, aesthetic, environmental, health and financial benefits. Improves mental and physical health from exposure to nature. Natural views create more productive, health, happy, creative, relaxed people. The environmental benefits urban heat island mitigation, fire prevention, water conservation and habitat creation. The health benefits from the phychological side is creative problem-solving while mentally restored as evidence by an increase sense of health and well-being. The physical reactions to natural settings seemed to lower both: blood pressure & heart rate. The financial benefits are political correctness, conservation of municipal septic systems, extension of roof life, and energy conservation. Always remember... your green roof isn't going to be green looking all year long, does your grass outside your front door stay that color .
Cool Roofs
Cool roofs are roofs that are designed to maintain a lower roof temperature than traditional roofs while the sun is shining. Sunlight is the primary factor that causes roofs to become very hot. Cool roofs have surfaces that reflect sunlight and emit heat more efficiently than hot or dark roofs, keeping them cooler in the sun. In contrast, hot roofs absorbs much more solar energy than cool roofs, making them hotter. Solar reflectance (% of sunlight that a surface reflects) and thermal emittance (how efficiently a surface cools itself by emitting thermal rediation) are the two key material surface properties that determine a roof's temperature.
